Comedy of Errors

Have you ever wondered if the lyrics of a song were somehow goofed up how funny that song would sound? In colloquial language, words are interchangeably used in whichever context desired by the communicator. We’ve started noticing this even in modern day songs. However, some words have true meaning and they definitely cannot be messed with, moreover when the words are from a wonderful song composed by a renowned lyricist. Well, now I am loosing context here.

Let me explain. The song “Dil Dhundta” is one of my favorite songs. How could it not be? It’s from the wonderful movie “Mausam”. Everything was great about the movie. Especially this song, which is written by the great lyricist Gulzar. Now, even though this may have been my favorite song or there are several other Gulzar songs that are my favorite, I must honestly admit I never spent an extra minute on trying to understand Gulzar saab’s lyrics. Obviously not his fault. Totally my ignorance. So from this wonderful song we all know the memorable line – “Aundhe Padhe Rahe Kabhi ,Karwat Liye Huye”. For the longest time, I knew the feel of this particular song, but I never sung it with full understanding. Especially this line. I always kept singing “Aundhe padhe” forgetting the remaining lines. And most recently I confused “Aundhe” for “Os”. “Aundhe” means lying on your back and “Os” means Dew. For some reason, I always remembered “Aundhe Padhe”. So with the idea that something’s falling I drew the conclusion that may be it’s Dew.

The song that you would be listening to would have been a total disaster if I had used “Aundhe” in the context that I had used it in earlier. Here are the previous lyrics –
“Aundhe padhe huye, rahon mein har kahin
Nile gagan ke tale, Tere Kadam jo padhe”
- Which would mean .. “I am lying on my back, everywhere on the streets, under the blue sky, whenever you come across” – Would have been a great song for a drunken romeo.
When I had originally thought of these lines I meant “Dew Drops everywhere, under the blue sky, whenever you come across”.

So as soon as I found that I had messed with the word “Aundhe”, I changed my lyrics and here’s the modified song. It’s another romantic song. It speaks about enjoying nature while in the company of your beloved. I recorded this song late at night. So there might be few flaws with my singing. And sorry for a late blog. I was travelling and I forgot to carry the microphone with me. I had one, but I am talking about the better one that doesn’t expose my shaky voice.

Kabhi Kabhi

Sometimes we wonder whether we have reached where we wanted to be. Or are we in the right profession; or achieved what we wanted to. Whatever we are doing on a day-to-day basis, whether that’s what we were built for. When I look around and see great achievers like Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore da or Sachin Tendulkar, and admire what they achieved in their lives it seems like they knew why they were brought on this planet. It’s like, at some point God told them – Hey you have to be a World Renowned Actor or that you have to be the Nightingale of India or the greatest Cricket player ever.

Wouldn’t it be nice if God or whoever that creates us (This one’s for the non-believers), tells us at some point in our life what we were really born for. Even if he tells us that one is to lead an aimless life we could tell the world – Hey that’s what God told me. I gotta do nothing and lead an aimless life .. ha ha. Not funny. The matter of the fact is we are all left with determining what we need to do with our lives. Coz if it was certain, life won’t be so exciting.

Speaking of me, as a notorious kid in school I never imagined obtaining a degree in engineering and ending up being an IBM product specialist. I always wanted to be an artist - a painter, an actor or a singer. So here I am again trying to pursue my creative interests while keeping my day job :-)

Don’t worry. This song ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ is not about my aimless thoughts of wondering where this passion will lead me. It’s just another romantic song from my closet. The beginning of the song was composed one year ago and I completed the rest last week. As for the soundtrack, I must say with limited knowledge of music, I am getting a little apt with the instrument. And it is addictive.

Har Ghadi Hai Juda

I know I didn’t upload a new post last Friday after saying I would be consistent the last time I had missed the posting. Well, this time it was a deliberate attempt. I will explain why. For some time I was feeling I wasn’t producing any new material and was just focusing on finishing up songs that I had composed a couple years ago. Every Friday the blog was turning into real work and
I was constantly keeping myself under pressure in order to deliver to my best ability. Honestly, it doesn’t quite work that way with creativity. Creativity needs to be spontaneous. There definitely needs to be a mood, some different kind of setting and most importantly a fresh mind.

I still don’t know how creative professionals pursue their interests as a job. I would be seriously struggling if I was told I had to compose 10 songs within a certain period of time where each song is based on a situation and that they should match the Production companies signature tastes, e.g YashRaj Films. No matter which music composer they choose when you listen to their songs you can tell it’s a song from a YashRaj movie.

Anyway, bottom line is that your hobby cannot be a full-time job when pursued as a hobby. And the best outcome of creativity is actually when it is pursued as a hobby and not a job. Otherwise it turns into a mundane activity. I managed to compose four to five new songs last week which I will complete and upload eventually.
