Punk Song - Hindi

After uploading a batch of soft romantic songs, I thought it was time for a hard rock, punk, fun-filled and joyful song. Or rather a typical indian-pop lover’s song. Also now that you’ve been introduced to the Art Of Puirt A Beul in my last post, hopefully you should be ok with the vocalization of instruments in between.

And of course, please continue to provide me your inputs and criticism. Trust me; just because you know me, doesn’t mean you have to praise me every single time. I know for a fact that I can be ridiculous at times. So I won’t be offended.

The Art of Puirt a beul

I had briefly mentioned previously in my prior post – “How It All Started” regarding playing music with my mouth. Today, I would like to elaborate further on that.

Playing music by mouth or making sounds to create a tune is not new to us. Even during our evolution we communicated with sounds more so than words. And even today there are some amazing performers who perform a complete song with 100% vocals and the song sounds as good as a recorded version.

I still remember the days in junior college when during a singing competition one contestant, just to keep the flow of the song, naturally played the music with mouth from one stanza to another. It was a Raj Kapoor and Mukesh song – “Kisiki Muskurahato pe ho nisar” and the antra is “Mana apni jeb se phakir hai” and before the next line, there is a quick sound of an instrument “ta da, ta da”. He played that. Everyone laughed. Some found it cute, others found it stupid. I laughed too.

Today when I look back, I would say it was such a natural thing for him to do. Sometimes while singing a song we do want to express the actual feel of music and if we don’t have the ability or the facility to play an instrument, we tend to play it with our mouth.

That’s really how I got started. Not really to be a professional performer for playing music with mouth. But because I couldn’t play an instrument it really helped me to finish my tunes with some vocalization of instruments. And this is no offense to those who play instruments. To be a music composer or even to be able to play an instrument is a remarkable job. It is fairly easy to whistle a tune than to play that same tune on piano.

But that shouldn’t discourage us who really cannot play an instrument. There could be several reasons why we can’t.

Hence, the art of – “Puirt a beul”. It is a Gaelic term for Mouth Music or vocalization of instruments. As per Wiki, the characteristics are –

It involves a single performer singing lighthearted, often bawdy lyrics, although these are sometimes replaced with meaningless vocables. In puirt a beul, the rhythm and sound of the song often have more importance than the depth or even sense of the lyrics.

I have so far being lucky to put some meaningful lyrics with the tunes. And in current times, I have started believing that this is exactly what most music composers are doing.

So for this week, there are no lyrics. I have put a random tune together with something that came to my mind. You might find it funny and stupid at first, but I am sure it will grow on you.

Hindi Song - Koi To Yeah Bataye

Now before moving on to the next song, I must say, I received 0 comments on my last post. That means either I did a fabulous job at a Marathi song or I really, really messed up.

No worries, I am kidding. Not that I don’t care about receiving comments. They certainly help me improve in general and keep my intent active to have everybody participate. But with the IPL season raving up, especially with Mumbai Indians at 18 points and receiving their cut to the semi-finals even I don’t care to post comments on Big B’s blog these days.

Now about – Koi To Yeah Bataye – This song in particular was my very first concrete song. By concrete, I mean, the very first song where I thought of the tune as well as the lyrics at the same time. That rarely happens. In most cases, it’s the tune or the melody that comes first.

One other thing that’s special about this song is that every time I sing it, I imagine someone like Suresh Wadkar or Shankar Mahadevan, to be apt for singing this song. Alright, Alright, I know, I am dreaming too high.

A Marathi Song

First of all, thanks again for your responses, encouragement, suggestions and comments. It truly helps. Plus you guys are really making my life easy. After every post I get worried about the content for my next post. But your comments are really helping me decide that.


On my last post, Avdhoot suggested that I upload a Marathi song. I did have one composed. But it was just the Mukhda. I composed the entire the song this week.

So let me discuss about Marathi songs in general. They are not easy to compose. I mean, yeah in current times, you could probably put some “dinchak” song together fairly easily. But a good Marathi song with great melody and simple yet meaningful lyrics is very difficult. Or atleast that’s the case for me.

It’s a bit shameful. But growing up in Mumbai, teaches you to be fluent in Hindi, Marathi and English. But all ‘Slang’. Again, that might be just the case with me.

But my point is, Marathi itself is a very rich language. And has a great history in the world of literature. There have been some amazing compositions of Marathi songs, poetry, stories over several years. But our normal exposure is towards Hollywood or Bollywood and ofcourse Bollywood songs for the most part and hence putting lyrics together for a Hindi or English song is easier than for Marathi.

Anyway, here’s my attempt towards a Marathi song. I am also posting translation of lyrics in English for Non-Maharashtrian followers. Well, the translation is not the best of the world. So pardon me for that.

Also, I may have goofed up on the lyrics for this song. So my dear Maharashtrian friends, feel free to suggest changes or updates to the lyrics.

The intent of this blog is not just to represent my songs but to have all of you actively participate in the song writing process.

The Fusion Song - Hindi

My sis-in-law, in her comments on my very first post, requested me to upload the fusion song.
Last summer when Sanchali’s parents and her sister had visited us, she’d liked this song in particular. They were gracious enough to listen to few of my tunes and songs when they were here.

If I were them, I would be tired of listening to me. Seriously, being around a guy who’s popping new tunes all the time or singing the same tune/song all the time just to discover what the next course of the song could be is not very pleasant. Now imagine Sanchali’s life. Well ... no need to elaborate on that. Is there? :)

So, back to the song. It’s a duet rain song. And it’s a fusion of western rock with a little Hindustani classical. I composed the antra last week. So that would be a real surprise to my sis-in-law, since there was no antra when she’d heard it.

The entire song is still on the soft romantic side, so don’t expect it to be hard core rock with traditional Hindustani classical. I have some of those too. Not sure how accurate they are from a technical standpoint. But, we shall discuss about that in some other post.

For now enjoy this song. And I would like to dedicate it to my sis-in-law, Mallika, for her birthday on April 4th. I hope you like it Malli.
